The giant monsters vs. robots flick Pacific Rim had a rough start at the box office last year but eventually made enough to warrant a sequel getting the green-light earlier this year. Since it’s release, the film has gained many loyal fans, and Warner Bros. is willing to put down the money and risk seeing just how many fans there actually are. It seems Warner Bros. is taking an even bigger gamble, by filming the second and third movie in the franchise back to back.
When speaking with Collider, director Guillermo Del Toro talked more about the future of Pacific Rim, saying:
“Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”
Pacific Rim was one of my favorite movies of last year, not because of the story, but because of the experience watching it. The story was lacking a little bit, but the giant monsters and robots fighting made it all worth it. Hearing that they’re planning the next one with a third in mind shows that Warner Bros. is putting even more faith into their franchises, and hopefully it will work out for them. Pacific Rim 2 is set for release in 2017, and between now and then you can catch a Pacific Rim animated series bridging the gap between the first and its sequel.
