Marvel had not expected Guardians of the Galaxy to be the smash hit it would become, but nonetheless they announced a sequel at Comic-Con ahead of its release. However, the plot it would follow ultimately would depend on the success of Guardians, and like the case is for Marvel most of the time, they had multiple plans for the path they would take.
But Guardians was a success, and a big one at that, which allowed Marvel to make another movie focused solely on the Guardians. While filming is not set to begin for a while, we already know quite a bit about the sequel. The entire main cast will be back, along with Nebula(Karen Gillan) ,Yondu(Michael Rooker), and probably Thanos(Josh Brolin). This time around, they will be joined by what director James Gunn calls his favorite superhero and Peter Quill’s father, who was only briefly mentioned in the first film.
In a recent interview with Vulture, Gunn revealed that the sequel will have similar overarching themes to the first one, but will also focus on fathers in particular:
There’s a lot of stuff I’m excited about in the new movie. Listen, I’m still excited about Star-Lord’s character and where he goes. At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there.
As Gunn says, Guardians 2 will have a heavy emphasis on fathers, and the first one that comes to mind is of course Peter Quill’s, who as I mentioned before, will make his debut in this one. But one particular dynamic that I’m really looking forward to see more of is the father-daughter relationship between Thanos and Gamora, who are now on opposite sides. Whether or not that plays a big part in the sequel remains to be seen, but it would certainly be an interesting angle, especially considering their complicated past.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set for release on May 5, 2017.
