The Lego Movie was one of the biggest surprise hits of this year. When it was first announced, people looked down on it, citing it as just a long advertisement. It ended up being much more, an animated movie with enough pop-culture references and comedy to entertain adults too.
The sequel is still a few years off, but directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are already dropping hints about it. BBC recently had the chance to speak with them, where they revealed some details about the perspective of the movie. “It’s important to us that the movie plays broadly and that we inspire young women as much as we inspire young men,” Lord said.
“I don’t want to give spoilers but there will be more female characters and more female stuff,” Miller added.
Besides Wyldstyle, the female part in the first film was a little underwritten. No one complained because of that, but it’s nice to see them acknowledge that it is something that should be dealt with. Besides the Disney princess movies, not many animated films are directed at girls. Even worse, very few are directed at both, which would be an even better idea.
At the end of The Lego Movie , we learned about the young boy Finn’s sister. She could potentially be the focus of the next film, which would be a great idea.
