Around the time that a Suicide Squad movie was formally announced, it was reported that Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling were being talked to about potential roles in the film. Ryan Gosling eventually dropped out because of the long commitment, but the rest are said to be in final discussions from the last we heard.
One of the most well-known members of the Suicide Squad is Harley Quinn, who recently became even more popular after the Batman: Arkham series of video games. That’s why it was puzzling when her character was not included on a list of the main ones in the film. That has since changed, as it’s rumored she as well as the Joker will be making appearances in the film.
Now, we know who might be playing her. Collider reports that The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie will take on the role of Harley Quinn. While the character has become one of Batman’s biggest villains, she is still yet to appear in any live-action films from DC. Her character’s origin is tightly knit with the Joker, so it seems almost impossible to have one without the other.
While I’m not too familiar with Robbie’s work, I have seen bits and pieces of it and she does seem to fit the part. Harley’s iconic costume is a red and white jester’s outfit, but it would be a big surprise if they actually brought that on-screen.
As to the nature of her character and whether she’s super realistic and grounded or not, it’s hard to tell. Man of Steel certainly established a DC universe firmly rooted in science and believability, but many of the characters from the Suicide Squad are rooted in the supernatural side of things.
Suicide Squad is set to be released on August 5, 2016.
