Much of the hilarious pop-culture references and unforgettable characters from The Lego Movie were courtesy of its directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, also known for 21 Jump Street. While it’s already been announced that another director, Robot Chicken alum Chris McKay, will take on the franchise, Lord and Miller are still coming back for the sequel.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has signed on Lord and Miller to pen the script for the sequel. Not much else is known about the second movie at this point, except that a Lego Batman spin-off is coming a year before it. All of the main cast is expected to return, including Chris Pratt as Emmet Brickowski.
The last time Lord and Miller left the franchise they started in someone else’s hands, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, it didn’t go so well. It’s not that it was bad, just not nearly as good as the first. However, McKay’s experience before this makes him a good choice, as Robot Chicken has a similar style of humor, just a little more adult. He also served as animation director on the first one, so he does know his way around the franchise. With Lord and Miller also returning to write, it will more than likely have the same amount of heart and hilarity that made The Lego Movie one of the standouts so far this year.
