Playmobil has always been kind of known as Lego’s underachieving sibling. It’s the kind of toy that if you opened it up on Christmas day, you’re parents got your gift wrong. Now it seems Playmobil’s ready to take the spotlight, in their very own movie no less.
According to Variety, On Entertainment has secured the rights to an animated movie based off of the property. The film is said to have an $80 million dollar budget, which is actually more than that of The Lego Movie.
It’s apparent that this is not going to be directed at American audiences, but rather foreign, especially in Europe, where On Entertainment is based out of. This seems to be a very ambitious budget, especially considering the popularity of the toy when compared with similar brands like Lego. I would find it more believable if this was just going to be a Direct-to-DVD type movie, but that’s not the direction they’re going in surprisingly.
The movie is set for release in 2017, the same year that the Lego Batman movie comes out.
