Remember those heady days of 2013, when Sony were going to make an entire Spider-Man Cinematic Universe, with multiple Amazing Spider-Man sequels plus spinoffs for basically every Spidey supporting character they could think of? And then Amazing Spider-Man 2 turned out to be such utterly toxic garbage that they all got cancelled?
We didn’t think we’d see the likes of those days again with the new, sensible, Tom-Holland-in-the-MCU strategy – but Sony evidently have other ideas. And so following the announcement that Tom Hardy will play Venom, news has now been announced of another spinoff: Silver & Black.
To be fair to Sony, though, this one sounds pretty interesting. The titular characters are Silver Sable – a mercenary originally created in the 1980s who recently reappeared in Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man – and the Black Cat, aka Felicia Hardy. A classic Spidey supporting character, Felicia has been around since the late 1970s, and any similarities to Catwoman are purely coincidental, honest. She’s currently a Kingpin-style villain in the comics, and a character of the same name – without the costume – was incredibly briefly played by Felicity Jones in ASM2.
While this could yet turn out to be Sony’s equivalent of Suicide Squad, it’s hard to turn your nose up at a dual female-led superhero movie in prospect – particularly with indie director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees, Love & Basketball) attached. It’s not Prince-Bythewood’s first brush with Marvel, either, as she directed the pilot for the upcoming Cloak & Dagger series at Freeform.
Written by Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) and Lisa Joy (Westworld), Silver & Black – in a surprisingly sensible move from Sony – doesn’t yet have an announced release date. We await casting news with keen interest.
