While she may be best known to superhero fans for her role as Claire Temple over on the Netflix Marvel shows, Rosario Dawson could be about to join Fox’s X-Men universe on the big screen.

Casting directors must be identifying a caring instinct in the actress, because after playing a nurse who patches up Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Dawson’s prospective New Mutants character is Cecilia Reyes; a doctor who discovers she possesses the mutant power to generate an invisible bio-field around herself.

Reyes would serve as a mentor to the young team of New Mutants, which currently includes Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik. Henry Zaga, who was most recently seen starring in 13 Reasons Why, is expected to join the cast as Sunspot, while the characters of Cannonball, Mirage and Warlock are yet to be cast.

Meanwhile, director Josh Boone has been discussing how his film will be taking an unusual approach for a superhero blockbuster. “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” he told EW. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

But while surprising, that does seem to chime with the choice to adapt ‘The Demon Bear Saga’ from the original run of New Mutants comics, which is the kind of dark and experimental story arc you wouldn’t usually expect to see adapted for a comic book movie either.

The EW piece goes on to quote an unnamed source describing the plot of the film. “Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world – they’re just trying to save themselves.”

It’s all sounding pretty intriguing to us, and with every new detail that emerges about New Mutants, it’s hard not to get excited about the movie’s potential. Stephen King meets John Hughes meets Chris Claremont… what’s not to like?

And now with the addition of Rosario Dawson, the film looks to have snagged an actress who’s capable of improving just about anything in which she appears. Claire Temple has been the glue that holds the four Defenders series together, and she’s proved to be a perennial bright spot whenever she pops up. Heck, she even made Iron Fist watchable for a hot minute!

New Mutants is slated to be released on April 13th 2018.
